The Christmas head!

In a chilly autumn morning I decided to make a series of photographs presenting my newest "head". A head that reminded winter, the cold portuguese sea, a tradicional christmas tree and some symbols of a true portuguese christmas.
The garden was a great place to do a nature photo-shoot with my christmas illustration. And so you have it:

A cabeça de Natal!

Numa manhã fria de outono, decidi fazer uma série de fotografias que apresentam a minha mais nova "cabeça". Uma cabeça que lembrava inverno, o frio mar português, uma árvore de Natal tradicional e alguns símbolos de um verdadeiro Natal português.
O jardim era um óptimo lugar para fazer sessão fotográfica natural com minha ilustração natalícia. E o resultado foi este:

The details in my illustration:  A small village, a trawler, the sea and fish, the rooster mass, the mountain of the star, the animals warming the christmas tree and the children opening presents. A christmas holliday voyage, a all bunch of wrapped gifts, the dry cod and the king cake.

Os detalhes da minha ilustração: Uma pequena aldeia, uma traineira, o mar e os peixes, a missa do galo, a serra da estrela, os animais a aquecer a árvore de Natal e crianças que abrem presentes. Uma viagem de natal, um monte de presentes embrulhados, o bacalhau seco e o bolo rei.

The onion saleswoman - A vendedora de cebolas

 It's been a while, since I've updated this blog... I´ve some new projects, that and my current job has resident illustrator for the Museum Municipal of my hometown :-) It´s been a great couple of months. So I have a lot to show and tell.

  The onion saleswoman, was a three page illustration that I created to participate in Ilustrarte - An international illustration competition that occurs every two years in Lisbon.                                                                    

  It tells an adaptation of a portuguese folk story, of a poor young girl, that wakes up every morning to go to the market and sell her wicked aunt's onions. One day, she notices a beautiful bluish onion crying, at the site of a cutting nife. She then understands that the special onion has feelings and refuses to sell it. That's the moment when the secret is revealed: from that bluish onion it births a beautiful young prince, who has been victim of a curse. After explaining her how her kindness and sensibility saved him, the prince finally invites her to be his wife.

  I have some other plans to this small story, and that is to create more pages and make a pocket book. Maybe in the near future....;-)

  Já passou um tempo, desde que actualizei este blog ... Tenho tido alguns novos projectos, entre os quais, o meu trabalho actual de ilustradora residente para o Museu Municipal de minha cidade natal :-). Tem sido um belo par de meses. Tenho portanto muita coisa para mostrar e contar.
  "A vendedora de cebolas", é um conjunto e três páginas ilustradas que criei para participar na Ilustrarte - Uma competição internacional de ilustração que ocorre a cada dois anos em Lisboa .

   Fiz uma adaptação de uma história popular portuguesa, acerca de uma jovem pobre, que acorda todas as manhãs para ir ao mercado vender as cebolas da tia má. Um dia, percebe que uma das cebolas, de cor azulada, começa a chorar quando alguém com uma faca de cortar se aproxima. Ela, então, entende que a cebola é especial e possuí sentimentos, recusando-se a vendê-la. Nesse momento o segredo é revelado: a partir da cebola azulada nasce como que por magia, um belo príncipe, que havia sido vítima de uma maldição. Depois de lhe explicar como a sua bondade e sensibilidade o salvou, o príncipe finalmente convida-a para ser sua esposa.

  Tenho outros planos para esta pequena história, e que começam por criar mais páginas e fazer um livro de bolso. Talvez num futuro próximo .... ;-)

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

Undefeated Head | Cabeça Invicta

Ontem terminei a 1ª de uma série de novas "cabeças" que irei colocar em exposição e venda nas galerias onde exponho os meus trabalhos.

Apresento-vos a "Cabeça Invicta", a minha menina do Porto!
Em cada cabeça que crio, utilizo diferentes tipos de pincelada, conforme aquilo que o desenho me transmite e me inspira. Adorei criar esta menina, até porque adoro a suculenta arquitectura do Porto, onde todos os pequenos pormenores que têm cada edifício nos fazem viajar no tempo e no espaço. É maravilhoso desenhar uma cidade com tanto para dar! Inclusive tive dificuldades em escolher os elementos a colocar na cabeça da menina. Não poderia de forma alguma encher-lhe a cabeça e sobrecarregar o desenho, hihi.

Yesterday I finished the 1st of a series of new "heads" that I will put on display and sale in galleries where I expose my works.

I present to you the "Undefeated Head", my girl of Porto!

In each head that I create, I use different types of stroke, according to what the drawing gives me and inspires me. I loved creating this girl, because I love the juicy architecture of Porto, where all the little details that have each building make us travel in time and space. It is wonderful to draw a city with so much to give! I even had difficulties in choosing the elements to put on this girl's head. I could not simply fill her head and overwhelm the design, hihi.

I can feel the Forest

It´s been some time since I've created an illustration more animal-oriented. And I simply love to draw animals, forests, little fantasy critters :-D. So, once more..inspired in all those fabulous that I've seen all my life (with deers and such...) I'm bringing to you this sweet piece, born from my dreams...

Já fazia muito tempo desde que desenhava ilustrações mais orientadas para fábulas. E eu simplesmente amo desenhar animais, florestas, pequenos bichos fantásticos :-D. Assim, uma vez mais .. inspirado em todos aqueles fabulosos desenhos animados que eu toda a vida vi (com veados e tal ...) trago-vos este doce desenho, nascido dos meus sonhos ...

  Time for a new experience!

  It´s a first for me, this kind of project...
  From a entity that I can not name, came a work proposal for a special kind of illustration, for an anatomic and real fact illustration of the human body. Not too realistic..not too childish. Just enough to have a serious but funny response from the final client. This is my first sketch of the lot. Tradicional illustration, watercolour in watercolour paper.

 Tempo para uma nova experiência!

 
  É a primeira vez para mim, este tipo de projecto...
  Vindo de uma entidade que não posso nomear, surgiu uma proposta de trabalho para um tipo especial de ilustração, para uma ilustração anatómica e factual do corpo humano. Nem muito realista .. nem demasiado infantil. Apenas o suficiente para ter uma reacção séria mas simpática da parte do cliente final. Este é o meu primeiro esboço do conjunto. Ilustração Tradicional, em aguarela, base de papel aguarela.

  These foto previews of my most recent project, are showing just enough of 5 pages that went over-lands to another country. To a illustration competition ^^. So, that being said, this little story will be keep hidden untill the end of October. 

  It was a fun ride anyways, whatever the result. Love.

  Estas foto previews do meu mais recente projecto, mostram apenas o suficiente das 5 páginas que acabaram de ser enviadas para outro país. Para um concurso de ilustração ^^. Esta pequena história irá manter-se escondida até ao final de Outubro.

Ensaio sobre as mulheres do mar - Rehearsal about the women of the sea

This is a Illustration that I began to sketch just for fun...without knowing what would come out of this. First I had in mind a study about the real clothes of the women of the portuguese folklore ranch by the middle of the 20th century (1945-55). Having some family records, specially from the women of my family, I was captivated with the richness and detail of the costumes, with bright colours. They also wore a lot of gold necklaces, earings and bracelets as part of the tradition. Flowers in the scarf, sea motifs, and a headpiece or cap. These two examples that I've created are ranch costumes of my birth town, that my family ancestors wore in festivity days.

I couldn't resist to adding a figurative moustache, just to accentuate the idea of how strong and tough these portuguese flowers were, in the days of the second world war. Despite the difficulties, they always had a warm smile and a beautiful costume to garnish the darkest days.

Esta é uma ilustração que eu comecei por esboçar apenas por diversão... sem saber no que iria resultar. Primeiramente, tinha em mente um estudo sobre as roupas reais das mulheres do rancho folclorico português da minha terra nos meados do século 20 (1945-55). Tendo alguns registos na família, especialmente das mulheres da minha família, fiquei cativada com a riqueza e os detalhes dos figurinos, com cores brilhantes. Elas também usavam um um conjunto de colares de ouro, brincos e pulseiras como parte do fato festivo. Flores no cachecol, motivos do mar, e um capacete ou boné na cabeça. Estes dois exemplos que ilustrei são trajes do rancho da vila onde nasci, que as minhas ancestrais usavam em dias de festa.

Não pude resistir a adicionar um bigode figurativo, apenas para acentuar a ideia de quão forte e resistente estas flores portugueses foram, nos dias da segunda guerra mundial. Apesar das dificuldades, elas tinham sempre um sorriso caloroso e um belo traje para enfeitar os dias mais sombrios.
